Exchanging a foreign driving licence

At the council where you are registered, you can apply, in certain cases, to exchange your valid foreign driving licence. Arrange an appointment beforehand. Pay when you make the request. Once this has been approved by the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (Rijksdienst voor Wegverkeer - RDW) you will receive a message and can then collect your Dutch driving licence.
What you should know
- You can continue to use a foreign driving licence in the Netherlands for a certain period of time. More information can be found on the RDW website.
- You can sometimes exchange your foreign driving licence for a Dutch driving licence. The conditions are different for each country and each situation.
What to take to your appointment
The RDW website tells you what to take to your appointment. This includes:
- valid foreign driving licence
- valid ID card / Valid proof of ID
- a passport photo, not older than 6 months, that meets the requirements
- debit or credit card
- If applicable:
- Certificate of Fitness
- 30% tax ruling
Costs
The costs for exchanging a foreign driving licence are € 51,10.
An urgent request/issue is not possible.
