Step-by-step guide
Step 1
Check foreign documents
Check whether your documents are registered with the council.
Log in to MijnOverheid.nl with your DigiD. Go to ‘Identity’. Under 'Personal details' in the 'Document description' section, you will find the documents that have been registered.
If your documents are not yet registered, make an appointment to register foreign documents.
Step 2
Gather documents and take them to your appointment
You require the following documents for your application. Take these documents with you to your appointment.
- Valid passport or another travel document
- Birth certificate from the country where you were born
Only take your birth certificate with you if you are unsure whether you have shown it before. - Valid residence permit
If you hold the nationality of a country in the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland, you do not need to show a residence permit.
During the appointment, you will be told if any additional documents are required. Sometimes you may need to arrange another meeting for this. The staff member at the service desk will tell you if this is necessary.
Payment
You pay the fee at the service desk in the city district offices. Payment can be made with your debit card or credit card.
Step 3
Make an appointment
Make an appointment for 'option' online, by clicking the ‘Make an appointment’ button. If you find this too difficult to do, call 14 076 to make an appointment.
Step 4
Wait for the mayor's decision
You will receive a letter with the mayor's decision within around 5 months after your application.
Step 5
Attend the naturalisation ceremony
If you are granted the Dutch nationality, the council will invite you to a naturalisation ceremony. You must attend the ceremony.
During the naturalisation ceremony, everyone aged 16 or older is required to take the Declaration of Solidarity. You are then officially a Dutch citizen.
